[Natural Disasters Contributor, Josh Winters]

US Geological Survey reports that a total of 12 earthquakes at magnitude 5+ struck the world today with  Spain suffering an M5.3 event which killed 4 people and damaged many buildings in Lorca in the south. The earthquake was at a depth of a mere 1km and around 120km south-west of Alicante. It happened at around 5PM GMT.  Whilst earthquakes trouble Spain, they do not normally cause casualties and such damage.

In the meantime, the Honshu region of Japan, home of the Fukushima Prefecture, a M5.6 earthquake struck early today. No damage, or tsunami warning has been reported.

Here are a list of the other M5+ level earthquakes striking the earth today (data from the US Geological Survey):-

‘Skype to Go’ as Microsoft edges towards $8.5 billion purchase

[Technology Contributer,Vinson Binter]

A deal not made in heaven analysts are saying, as Microsoft Corp limbers up to buy troubled social networking giant, Skype, for $8.5 billion.

If the deal goes through, it will be Microsoft’s biggest and will enable the company to give Google a good run for its money in the Internet and mobile phone communications area, but at a considerable price it seems.

That is because, Skype, with its 145 million users, has not been doing that well. Last year it lost $7M on revenues of $860 million and analysts are worried that Microsoft, at that purchase price will never be able to generate enough sales for payback and profit on the deal.

Pippa Middleton’s nude photo reveals all – family seeks censorship

Pt.I – first the bottom, then the top!

[Samantha Templeton-Brewster, Celebrities Contributor]

The Middletons are hopping mad over what they see as a major invasion of their daughter Pippa‘s privacy with UK newspapers having the gall to publish photos of her with and without her bikini on.  They have complained to the UK Press Complaints Commission (‘PCC’) which is considering the matter.

In the meantime, the red-faced newspapers, News of the World, Daily Mail, Mail on Sunday and Daily Mirror are in a mad scramble to de-activate the offending photos, but have made no comment thus far.

In an earlier picture published courtesy of the Socyberty, Pippa (pictured above in what seems to be the original photo published in Socyberty) is shown nude in the process of a bikini change.

Son of Bin Laden, Hamza the ‘Crown Prince of Terror’ beckons good fortune for President Obama’s 2012 re-election bid

[US Politics & WOT Analyst, Jenni Kymi]

Next year will be a good year for America’s new superhero – President Barack Obama.

Having by all accounts despatched the elusive Osama bin Laden to a watery grave and now with a Bin Laden, Part II panning out in the shape of news that Mr. Laden’s youngest son and closest confidante, Hamza (aka ‘Crown Prince of Terror’), may have escaped capture at the Abbottabad incident is good news indeed for the president.

That is because, Mr. Obama will be presented with the opportunity, as 2012 looms, to show the American people true resolve in bringing total closure to the Al Queada menace by tracking down and nutralizing Hamza and the remaining Al Queada network, now presumably in Pakistan. In addition, why not a ‘war on terror‘ kind-of -thing with Pakistan? After all they seem to have kept Bin Laden secretly in their bosom for more than 10 years whilst he was being watched by US officials with the assistance of Pakistani intelligence, or the Pakistani government, or both of them (Sounds strange?  Well that’s how the facts are emerging). All that certainly wouldn’t go amiss as it would fit in very well with the innate conservatism of Americans when the USA is at war – never get rid of the incumbent president as it sounds like defeat. Worked for George W Bush with Iraq and by gum, it will work for Mr. Obama.

Assange gets Australian peace prize

[Wikileaks News Contributor,  Zara Kingsley]

Telegraph:  The Sydney Peace Foundation awarded Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, the Sydney Peace Medal at a moving ceremony at the Frontline Club in central London yesterday. It was awarded for: “for exceptional courage in pursuit of human rights”.

The  Sydney Peace Foundation is a non-for-profit organisation associated with the University of Sydney. It awards the Sydney Peace Prize which is the only International Peace Prize awarded in Australia.  The peace prize is supported by the City of Sydney by funding and active assistance in the humanitarian aims of the foundation.

The director of the foundation, Professor Stuart Rees, said: “By challenging centuries old practices of government secrecy and by championing people’s right to know, WikiLeaks and Julian Assange have created the potential for a new order in journalism and in the free flow of information.”

Mr. Assange said that  WikiLeaks mirrored England‘s historic free speech traditions, these go back in the UK to the time of the English Civil War of the 1640……the  real value of this award, and the Sydney Peace Foundation is that it makes explicit the link between peace and justice”.
