BBC News reports that Gmail users in their thousands have had their email accounts wiped clean in an embarrassing mishap for the Internet giant, Google.

Emails, contacts, images and documents stored in the accounts have been affected. The company is saying that the problem has affected only 0.8% of its users and for some of them, it managed a fix by restoring the data, and also that the restoration work for the others is still ongoing.

Google has around 200 million Gmail accounts.
