Suspected Wikileaker Bradley Manning, who is being held in a US military jail and charged with the unauthorised use and disclosure of classified information, is a UK citizen according to a Guardian report out today.
Human rights groups such as Amnesty International as saying that as Britain is a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights, it is obliged to intervene where a citizen is subject to infringements of their human rights such as the impaired ability to defend themselves in a court due to the conditions of their detention.
Since July 2010, Bradley Manning, 23, a serving US soldier has been held in a maximum security military prison in Virginia on suspicion of having passed off US state secrets to WikiLeaks. It is reported that the conditions of his detention are extremely harsh and that he is on a suicide watch whereby he is allowed only to wear his underpants and he is kept alone in his cell 23 hours a day and checked every five minutes. He is restrained throughout when he has visitors.
What do you think about Bradley’s situation? Should Britain intervene, or is he getting his just desserts for spilling secrets?
